Tangem reinvents the hardware wallet concept. Instead of a device with a screen, battery and charging port, Tangem is a set of plain NFC cards — similar to a contactless credit card. There are no buttons, no ports and no battery. The private key is generated on the card itself and never leaves it.
Setup takes about 2 minutes: tap the card to your phone, choose a PIN and you're done. Compare this to setting up a Ledger (10-15 minutes including firmware updates) and the appeal for beginners is obvious.
Tangem's most controversial design choice is that, by default, there is no seed phrase. The private key exists only on the physical cards — there is no 24-word backup phrase to write down. This eliminates seed phrase theft and phishing attacks. If you lose all your cards, you lose your funds.
This is why Tangem sells 2-card and 3-card sets — the additional cards ARE your backup. You can store card 2 at home and card 3 in a safety deposit box. Tangem has recently added an optional seed phrase mode for users who prefer the traditional approach.
Despite its simplicity, Tangem's security credentials are serious. The Samsung S3D350A secure element holds EAL6+ certification — the highest level found in any consumer hardware wallet reviewed here. This chip is also used in government ID cards and passports.
The key generation happens entirely on the card using a hardware RNG (Random Number Generator). No computer is involved in the process. Each card is individually tested and the key generation ceremony is audited.
