Gnosis Pay is the first genuinely self-custodial Visa card. Instead of holding your money on an exchange, you spend directly from a Safe smart account you control on Gnosis Chain. There is no centralized custodian holding your funds — you keep the keys, and the card draws from your own on-chain account at point of sale.
This is a meaningful philosophical and practical difference from every custodial crypto card. It combines the self-sovereignty of DeFi with the everyday convenience of a Visa card accepted across Europe and beyond. Cashback is paid in GNO, the Gnosis ecosystem token.
When you sign up, Gnosis Pay deploys a Safe smart account on Gnosis Chain that you own. You fund it with EURe (a regulated euro stablecoin) or other supported assets. At point of sale, the card spends from this Safe account on-chain, with a short on-chain settlement delay handled by the protocol's design.
Because the account is self-custodial, only you can move the underlying funds — Gnosis Pay cannot freeze or seize your balance the way a custodial provider can. GNO cashback is credited based on the amount of GNO you hold, with higher holdings unlocking higher cashback rates (up to 4%).

Gnosis Pay's defining security property is self-custody: funds live in a Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) smart account that only you control, audited and battle-tested as the most widely used smart-account standard in DeFi. The card itself runs on the Visa network with standard fraud protection. Because no third party custodies your balance, counterparty risk is dramatically reduced — the main responsibilities (key management, account security) shift to the user.
